Summary of Position

The Assistant Dean for Admissions is responsible for managing all aspects of juris doctor (J.D.) student recruitment and enrollment for the University of California, Irvine School of Law. Reporting directly to the Dean, the Assistant Dean leads the Admissions Office, develops and implements a competitive marketing and recruitment strategy, allocates scholarships to incoming J.D. students, manages and develops pipeline programs, and oversees and participates in activities designed to facilitate acceptance by admitted applicants to the J.D. degree program. The programs and processes are designed to attract and admit highly qualified and talented applicants from a range of backgrounds and experiences to advance the law school鈥檚 commitment to excellence. As a member of the senior leadership team of the Law School, the Assistant Dean represents the interests of the Law School at national meetings and conferences and oversees a sophisticated professional staff in the Admissions Office. Applicants should possess a strategic orientation towards law school admissions, be an inspiring leader within the admissions field, and bring an innovative, data-driven, and collaborative mindset to the position.

What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Demonstrated excellent judgment to evaluate candidates, review application files, and make admissions recommendations and decisions.
  • Knowledge of federal and state law and regulations related to enrollment management, admissions, and financial aid.
  • Skill in developing and managing financial budgets.
  • Senior level management experience and skill in program review, institutional assessment processes, and inter-office coordination.
  • Ability to implement and arrange for training in the use of existing computer programs and software tailored for Admissions applications.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, collaborative relationships, including effectively enlisting support of faculty members, University staff, students, alumni, campus administrators and community constituencies, and to work collaboratively to accomplish program goals.
  • Skill in interacting effectively with individuals or groups representing various social, cultural, economic, and educational interests.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and an ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Skill in managing, directing and motivating personnel with diverse experiences and strengths in a complex, collaborative, consensus-based environment to fulfill goals and objectives. Demonstrated capacity to work as a team member and team builder.
  • Record of honesty and integrity.
  • Ability to travel extensively and to work evening and weekend hours.
  • Ability to work with, understand, and maintain the confidentiality of large amounts of quantitative and qualitative admissions data.
  • Ability to manage a heavy workload, effectively delegate portions of that workload to career admissions officers and staff and motivate employees and volunteers toward high performance.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience. Previous experience leading or supervising a team.


Preferred:

  • Juris Doctorate or LL.M. degree from an ABA-accredited law school preferred, with in-depth knowledge of law schools and the legal field.
  • Senior administrative experience at an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Knowledge of UC admissions and related regulations
